Summoning Dark
Right. Before I get started, allow me to excuse explain this particular spiel, or at least the reasons behind it.

I've been reading a lot of ATF-verse fic lately (All hail the awesomeness that is Mog) and the particular fics which brought this one were the 'Denuo' series, which I ran across on Blackraptor, and 'More than One Kind of Hero', which was recced on [info]mag7ficfind.

For those of you who haven't read the series, or who need reminding, in one of the fics in the series Chris is diagnosed with leukaemia. And in MTOKOH, Ezra and Buck have to be tested for HIV.

I'd also been reading OW fics, and it occurred to me that in the OW-verse, many relatively common disorders wouldn't have been recognised or even known of. So I watched S1 again with that thought in the back of my head, and the more I watched, the more convinced I became that Ezra has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Now I realise that few (if any) people will have heard of it, so allow me to explain. Ehlers-Danlos is a genetic defect which affects collagen production. Symptoms are many and varied, but some of them include: unusual flexibility, tendency to frequent dislocations (particularly of the hips and shoulders), very soft skin, slow healing, tendency to scar easily, low blood pressure, dizziness, fainting spells, resistance and/or adverse reaction to painkillers and sedatives...you get the picture.

The important ones here are the dislocations, the soft skin, and the reaction to drugs. These are some of the most common symptoms, but more importantly they're all characteristics that Ezra has.

Soft skin for starters. "Tactile sensitivity". I rest my case.

The major one is the dislocations. In 'Ghosts of the Confederacy', Ezra dislocates his left shoulder. I've watched the scene over and over again, and the only way a fall that minor could have caused an injury like that is if the joint was already unstable. Also, his surprisingly controlled reaction leads me to believe that this isn't an infrequent occurrence. A dislocated shoulder is agony. How well he deals with it is a fairly sure indication that he's had to do so on more than one occasion before.

Hmm... I've just realised that my 'drugs' point is actually fairly weak, since I genuinely can't remember if Ezra's consistent refusal to take laudanum is canon or fanon. But if it is canon, then this is a valid point.

Oh well. Cease babble. I don't know if rants need to be declared open or closed like universes, but if anyone is crazy enough to use my waffling as a plot bunny, feel free.</lj>

Oh my god. You're - wicked good. What an awesome idea for an Ez-illness.

I've been checking out your journal; however in the world did you get into M7??? Just curious, 'cause I think it's a great thing - but I am very curious about the path that wound to it . . .

Thank god for that. I was worried anyone who read this would think I was insane. But what better way to show your love for a character than to saddle him with some bizarre genetic defect...?

I got into Mag7 by the oddest route. I was on youtube, trying to find the version of 'Holding out for a Hero' that's in Shrek 2, and the vid I found was to M7 clips. Initially I was just listening to the music with the window minimised, but then I actually watched it and discovered that this fandom was made of awesome. So I went looking for fic. After having browsed through the recs on [info]crack_van, I went out and bought season 1 on DVD. And then a couple of weeks ago I started writing.

How - wonderful. you came into it the same way I did, through the fandom. I was reading it several years before I started writing it because I had a close friend who was in it and I was reading her fic (she did, oddly, Josiah/Ezra slash - who knew how off the wall that was going to be?).

Yes - the fandom is made of awesome and glad you've found BR and the crack_van recs - they are among the best stories out there. (I love crack_van). Check out Drinking n' Fighting (http://dnf.slashcity.org/index.php) as well - the current benevolent list dictator, Charlotte, is the other MB fan who's been thinking of the Aliens/M7 crossover story!

I've come into so many fandoms this way: SG-1, Starsky and Hutch, Life on Mars... Mag7's the only one I write for, though. It's amazing how much of a feel you can get for important canon events through fic.

(Josiah/Ezra? How magnificently insane)

I've written the beginning of the crossover, though all we have so far is a brief appearance by Chris, and no aliens as of yet. I'll work on it. I'll look forward to reading Charlotte's take on it.

I suspect you're farther ahead than Charlotte - I don't know that she's gotten past the thinking about it stage/formulating the plot. but you should definitely read her stories, especially the Skip Trace universe (which is one of my fave all-time universes).

Yeah - Josiah/Ez - and they were really good. maybe that's why I still have a hard-to-impossible time with Ezra/Vin; I can read and even write C/E, but I just cannot see E/V at all. I suspect the Ez/Josiah - which was, of course, fraught with many philosophical conversations about right and wrong and good and evil and the like - has colored my ability to see Ezra with Vin at all.

I never saw Ezra/Vin either...then somehow it became my favourite pairing while I wasn't looking. I don't know. I do enjoy pairings with characters who're so different - maybe that's it. And of course something totally random and off the wall (like J/E) is always fun.
